VIPAVA VALLEY
Vipava Valley is the largest wine-growing region in Primorska. The lower part of the Vipava Valley is separated from Brda by the Soča River, but the two neighboring regions have a lot in common. They both share a similar climate, an extremely long tradition that dates back to Roman times, as well as a variety of reeds, as ribolla grows wonderfully on the hills by the Vipava River, as well. Kromberk and the Hillrocks of Vrtojba and Bilje are historic locations, where once upon a time grapes were grown for wines that were sought-after far and wide, and traveled all the way to Vienna and to farther places in Italy; they were highly sought-after in Slovenian regions as well, as even Janez Vajkard Valvasor wrote about the “vipavec” (type of wine from the Vipava Valley).
