GORIZIA HILLS
Gorizia Hills or simply “Brda” is the westernmost and most recognizable Slovenian wine region in the world. It is surrounded to the east by the Soča River Valley, to the north by the pre-Alpine world, to the west by the Italian state border and the Friuli region, and to the south the hills descend into the lowland world between Gorizia and Cividale, in Italy. Ribolla and jakot are the two grapes, indigenous to the Gorizia Hills, but many global varieties thrive here, too. Brda is a magical land: from the highest elevations you can see both the sea and the white Alpine peaks at the same time. The extreme conditions for the growth of vines on flysch or “opoka”, steep vineyards, beautiful sunshine, little rainfall in the summer months and the clever viticulture of hardworking people from Brda give the grapes a special quality. From these grapes, characteristic wines with a high mineral content and a unique taste are produced in Brda.
